  Literature is frequently the source for visual arts. It readily transforms itself into painting, sculpture, film, theatre, music and opera. The conference aims to analyze how Italian literature written within and without Italy transcends the written page and becomes conceptual, aural, and visual. The conference focuses on the following questions: in what ways do certain films, music, sculptures and paintings trace their origins from Italian literary works? Does visual art make the consumption of the text easier? Is visual art that is born from Italian literature indebted to it, or does it become an independent product? Is visual art a re-presentation or a resurrection of literary texts? Is the theatrical work best defined as performance or as literature (or both)? What is the semiotic relationship between musical instruments and character? What is the nature of the limit between literature and visual art?
   
  The keynote speaker of the Graduate conference will be Professor Millicent Marcus from Yale University.
   
  We invite the submission of papers both in Italian and in English, either on Italian Literature or on Italian literature in comparison to any other national literature. Please submit an abstract of 250-300 words by January 27th 2007 to the following e-mail address: performingitalianliterature_at_yahoo.it .

  La letteratura è spesso fonte delle arti visive in quanto si trasforma con facilità in pittura, film, teatro, musica ed opera. Lo scopo della conferenza sarà quello di analizzare come la letteratura italiana, scritta sia in Italia che all'estero, trascende la pagina scritta e diventa concettuale, auditiva e visiva. La conferenza cercherà di rispondere alle seguenti domande: in che modo film, letteratura, musica, scultura e pittura prendono spunto dall'opera letteraria? Le arti figurative rendono il testo più facilmente consumabile? Le arti visive nate dalla letteratura sono inseparabili da essa o ne sono un prodotto indipendente (o entrambi)? L'arte figurativa è ri-presentazione o ressurrezione del testo letterario? L'opera teatrale viene meglio definita come performance o come testo letterario? Qual è il rapporto semiotico fra strumenti musicali e i personaggi del testo letterario? Qual è la natura del limite tra letteratura e arte visiva?
   
  Interverrà sul tema la professoressa Millicent Marcus dalla Yale University.
   
  Invitiamo a spedirci saggi in italiano o in inglese, sulla letteratura italiana o sulla letteratura italiana comparata ad altre letterature nazionali. Preghiamo di spedire un abstract di 250-300 parole all'indirizzo e-mail performingitalianliterature_at_yahoo.it entro il 27 gennaio 2007.
