CFP: Miami's English Graduate and Adjunct Association's Symposium

SPACE AND DISCIPLINE(S)

We invite individual and panel proposals for our fourth annual symposium
which will be held March 31st, 2007 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
This year's theme emphasizes and explores the complexities surrounding
issues of space and place. We encourage proposals that question and
analyze ideas fundamental to such a theme. It is our hope that the
symposium will be a space for blurring disciplinary borders as we begin to
examine practices and possibilities surrounding existing notions of space
and place across academic boundaries. The conference theme offers a wide
range of responses to the ideas of space and place and the ways in which
these concepts discipline borders and/or identities. We welcome proposals
from all humanities departments as well as from persons not affiliated
with any academic institution. Further, we encourage proposals for
non-traditional presentations including performances and creative
installments.

Presentations might address but certainly are not limited to the following
questions concerning space and/or place:

*What are the differences between space and place?
*How are spaces used to construct/subvert power structures?
*Who owns 'space'?
*How can space and place help us rewrite history, pedagogy, literature,
assessment, research, admissions, and/or publishing?
*How do space and place get ignored, inscribed, and/or connected to other
social, political, and cultural moments or identities?
*How can representations of space help us represent self and others more
clearly and ethically?
*How does space affect rhetorical strategies?
*How do time and space influence/co-construct one another?

Or your presentation may address one of the following broad themes related
to Space and/or Place:

*Globalization
*Technology
*Ecology/Environment
*Borders and/or Immigration
*Geographies of Different Spaces
*Spatial Metaphors
*Pedagogical Space(s)
*Performative Space(s)
*Queer Space
*Invisible Spaces
*Silence as Space
*Disciplinary Space
*Place and Memory
*Subversive Space
*Representations of Space/ Place
*Popular Culture as Space

Our featured speakers for this symposium are LuMing Mao, whose most recent
publication is _Reading Chinese Fortune Cookie: The Making of Chinese
American Rhetoric_, and cris cheek, whose multimedia creative work
includes the forthcoming collection _Part_, and can be viewed at
crischeek.net.
