Bodies in Motion, Languages in Motion:
An Interdisciplinary Forum

A graduate symposium co-sponsored by the Department of French & Italian and
the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Minnesota-Twin
Cities.

This symposium will explore how different fields of study are integrated to
shed new light upon various aspects and components of bodies and languages
in motion. This year's plenary speaker will be acclaimed sociologist John
O'Neill from York University-Toronto.

We welcome proposals for 20-minute presentations in English that integrate
literature, linguistics, cultural studies or any other discipline with the
following themes and topics:
• Modern and Contemporary Bodies: the diasporic body, the racialized body,
the modified body.
• Resisting Bodies: the martyred body, the tortured body.
• Protean Bodies: the hermaphroditic and other versatile bodies; the
gendered consequences of mind/body interaction.
• Creative Bodies: performance, film, music and other aesthetic
experiences.
• Expressive Bodies: languages in contact, language variation and change.
The list suggests a wide array of topics, however, it is not meant to be
exhaustive nor limiting in its scope. Submissions from all disciplines and
time periods are encouraged. Abstracts submitted should be in English and
of no more than 300 words accompanied by the title of the paper, name,
academic affiliation, email address and any other relevant contact
information. Abstracts must be sent via email to:
umngradsymposium2007_at_gmail.com

Deadline for submission: January 31st, 2007
