Oceanic Popular Culture Association Conference

May 25-27, 2007
Chaminade University of Honolulu
Panel and individual paper proposals are now being accepted for the Surf =
Culture Area of the inaugural Oceanic Popular Culture Association =
Conference. All topics and proposals will be considered, and those =
treating the conference theme of "Work and Play" will be especially =
welcome. Possible areas of focus might include surf history, culture, =
literature, music, design evolution, etc.

Rite and Ritual: the signification of surfing in early Polynesian =
cultures
Mark Twain's fascination with 18th c. Hawaiian waveriding
Pioneers of surfing in early 20th c. California--(re)inventing the wheel
Intersecting surf and mass cultures:=20

Seeking the real: Duke Kahanamoku and the idealized Hawaiian waterman

Difference in the line-up: Localism, "Surf Rage," and the ironies of =

EBay and the spread of Ukulele Culture
Surfing and Globalization ("new frontiers" and the colonizing impulse)
Corporatizing the Stoke: Quicksilver, Hurley, and international =
conglomerates
Manufacturing sameness: what epoxy technologies are doing to the surf =

Abstracts/Proposals due by March 1, 2007.
