(De/Re)Constructed Identities in Iberian and Luso-Hispanic Literatures

The Spanish Graduate Students Committee of the Department of Romance
Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago welcomes abstracts
for its forthcoming conference that will take place on October 5-6, 2007.
The conference focuses on the (de/re)construction of identities in the
literature produced in Spain, Portugal and Latin America (including Brazil)
from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Its aim is to cover a wide variety
of topics including transatlantic studies and modern theoretical
perspectives.

Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes in length (10 pages MLA format).
Interested scholars, faculty and graduate students may submit a one-page
abstract (250-300 words) to be considered anonymously, together with a cover
letter including name, academic affiliation, title of the presentation, and
email address. Abstracts may be submitted individually or as a panel. They
could tentatively deal with any of the following topics:

• Syncretism and palimpsest.
• The creation of the Other.
• (Proto)Nationalism/Imperialism.
• Alienation and exile.
• Queer and gender studies.
• Film and literature.
• Antropofagia.

• Technology and identity.
• Comedy, parody and satire.
• Traumas and illnesses.
• Disguises and costumes.
• Traveling bodies.
• Intertextuality.
• Race and slavery

This list is meant to be suggestive rather than exhaustive; we welcome
papers and panel proposals on other topics related to the conference from
all theoretical perspectives. Interdisciplinary approaches are also
encouraged. Both panels and abstracts can be submitted in Spanish or English
