A Proposed Special Session for the 2007 Annual Convention of the Modern Language Association

Papers are solicited which consider innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to war and the military in the humanities. Emphasis will be on the intersections of ethics, representation, and historiography. While the panel lends itself to pedagogical essays, presentations that provide innovative, suggestive readings of texts about war and the military will be considered favorably as well.

Topics particularly sought:
Insights into just war theory and other attempts to create moral frameworks for understanding war.
Approaches to using literature and film to teach ethical and sociological perspectives on the military.
Projects which explore the agency of journalism, photojournalism, and other forms of representation in war.
Readings of literature and film that link the texts to the historiography of particular wars.
Approaches to teaching and contextualizing propaganda.
Insights into exploring ethics, agency, and experience from the soldier's perspective.
Analyses of the complex functions of memorials.
Reflections on the impact of modern communication technologies on the soldier's experience of combat.

Please e-mail a 300-word abstract with a short biography to Brook Miller at cbmiller_at_morris.umn.edu by February 15th, 2007.

All participants must be members of the MLA before 7 April 2007. The 2007 MLA Annual Convention will be held in Chicago, IL December 27-30, 2007.
