CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
Rodopi Press Amsterdam/Atlanta announces a new series of literary studies
entitled "Dialogue" under the general editorship of Michael J. Meyer. The
series will offer new and experienced scholars the opportunity to present
alternative readings and approaches to classic texts. Plans are being made for a
volume on Alice Walker's The Color Purple. The guest editors for this volume
will be Delroy Constantine-Simms and Kheven LaGrone.
The Color Purple is a simple story that has been criticized and acclaimed
worldwide. It was an award winning novel, then an award winning Hollywood
movie and more recently, an award winning Broadway play. The movie was accused
of bashing Black men and helping to drive a wedge between Black men and
women. It flirted with stereotypes of Black women's sexuality. Conservatives
accused the book of promoting homosexuality. Some lesbians accused the story
of suggesting that lesbianism is only a reaction to men. It's been called a
Black story, a woman's story and a Black woman's storyâ€"sometimes as if those
genres were mutually exclusive.
The call will work as follows: Proposals (no longer than 500 words) and
outlines can be submitted to the guest editors at _kheven_at_aol.com_
(mailto:kheven_at_aol.com) . The proposals are due on or before April 1, 2007.
Proposers will be notified by May 1, 2007 if their proposal has been
accepted. They will be invited to write an essay to be considered for the volume.
The essays will be due February 2008 (exact date to be announced by April
2007). Expected publication date is February 2009.
