The Nomadic Artifact
Nomadism: a kind of critical consciousness that resists settling into
socially coded modes of thought and behaviour...it produces the subversion
of set conventions.
Rosi Braidotti quoted in Pauline Butling and Susan Rudy's
Writing in Our Time
This panel invites you to submit papers which investigate the movement of
the artifact. We seek papers in which the nomadic artifact transgresses
boundaries: shifting against or across borders. The nomadic artifact may
be an object of the flaneuse, picara or the fugue; however, no matter how
it travels, whether in city, country or ruin, the nomadic artifact must
detach from its original dwelling space and resist settlement. An example
of a nomadic artifact might be textual such as Ondaatje's English
patient's companion, Herodotus, a well-used book consisting of maps,
photographs, paintings, and letters, or the daily ledger carried by Dawe
in Kroetsch's Badlands. However, the nomadic artifact does not need be
only textual as there are myriad other examples. As the nomadic artifact
is examined, how does it impede its collector? How is it marginalized?
What metamorphosis takes place? What site attracts or rejects the nomadic
artifact?
Papers on the flanerie of the nomadic artifact and tracing of the nomadic
artifact are strongly recommended.
Deadline for submissions: 2 February 2007
Please submit 250 word proposals (for papers approx. 15 minutes in length)
to panel chair Carmen Derkson at caderkso_at_ucalgary.ca. Attachments should
be in Rich Text or Word format only, and please include your name,
professional affiliation, and contact information in the body of your
email.
