Y/X Undergraduate and Graduate Research Conference
Boundaries and Balance: Globalism and “America”
Call for Papers
The American Studies Program/Wayne State University
Detroit, MI
Friday, March 30, 2007, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Tyrone Williams (Xavier University, OH)

Since its inception in 2001, the Y/X conference has given undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to explore what “America” means in a variety of contexts. This year, the WSU American Studies Program invites papers and creative works that investigate how globalism and “America” relate to one another. In the context of globalism, what are the “boundaries” of “America”? How are these “boundaries” established, transcended, or disturbed?

Possible topics may include (but are not limited to):

*The Impact of American Globalism on Literary Genres
*History and American Globalism
*American Cultural Imperialism and Globalism
*The Impact of Technologies on American Globalism
*American Anti-Globalism Movements (which emphasize the “local”)
*Environmental and Ecological Impacts of American Globalism
*Identity Politics and American Globalism
*The Reaction of the Art Community to American Globalism
*Political Movements and American Globalism

We welcome scholarly works, creative presentations, and multi-media presentations. Two-hundred-word abstracts for individual papers must include the prospective presenter’s name, department and university affiliation, level of study (undergraduate or graduate), and email address in the upper right corner of the page. Panel submissions are also welcome and must be accompanied by a cover sheet detailing the applicability of the panel to the conference theme and the panelists’ names; the individual abstracts for a panel must be stapled to the cover sheet and must contain the information mentioned above. An email regarding whether papers have been accepted or declined will be sent via email on March 1, 2007.

Address all submissions by FEBRUARY 18, 2007 to:
