Proposed Paul Auster Society
Call for Papers
American Literature Association
May 24-27, 2007
Boston, MA

I am seeking proposals for presentations addressing the works of Paul
Auster for a session at the American Literature Association
conference in Boston from May 24 to May 27, 2007. The panel will take
the form of a round table discussion. In addition, the session could
serve as an opportunity for discussion for all interested in the
formation of a Paul Auster Society. Topics may include but are not
limited to:

Auster's writing in the context of traditions of American literature
Auster's approach to characterization
Interactions between fiction and creative non-fiction in Auster's
novels and autobiographical writings
Auster's choices of genre and his use of writing across genres
The role of New York City in Auster's imagining of America
The novels, poetry, memoirs and translations of Paul Auster
Auster's use of narrative fiction in his representation of a life
Consciousness in the fiction of Paul Auster
Auster's translation of "The Notebooks of Joseph Joubert"
The presence and absence of Europe in Auster's work

I would encourage proposals that take innovative approaches to the
discussion of contemporary writers and their work, in particular
proposals that blend creative and critical approaches in offering a
response to Auster's writing.

Presentations should be 8 to 10 minutes in length. Please submit
abstracts of 100 words. In addition please supply a brief biography
and indicate whether you would require audio visual equipment.
Deadline: January 20, 2007. Send proposals to:
