"With Pen in Hand: The Future of English Studies"

General Call for Papers

Virginia Tech's Department of English welcomes the submission of
abstracts from all disciplines on all topics addressing writing,
literature, and culture for the annual graduate student conference—
With Pen in Hand—taking place March 16th and 17th, 2007. This year's
topic is "The Future of English Studies."

The sub-title for this year's conference comes from keynote speaker
Dr. Timothy Mayers' book entitled "(Re)Writing Craft: Composition,
Creative Writing, And The Future Of English Studies." Mayers' text
addresses the divides in many contemporary English departments,
explores connections between composition and creative writing
programs, and advocates a productive dialogue that can invert a
hierarchy that privileges textual interpretation over textual

As the MFA in Creative Writing at Virginia Tech continues to grow,
this year's conference will include panels regarding creative writing—
both the practice and the theory. We welcome submissions of poetry,
drama, and short stories, as well as essays concerning the craft and
theory of creative writing.

While we're excited to have Dr. Mayers' as our keynote, it should be
stated that papers need not specifically address the conference
theme. Last year's panels, for example, included:
Rhetoric, Discourse, and Language in Fiction
Professional Communication
Postmodern Writers
Critical Theory
Gender Studies
Cultural Studies
Rhetoric and Composition
Poetry Readings
Fiction Readings
Poster Sessions

Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes.
Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words by February 16th,
Block hotel reservations have been made and we will help with other
accommodations (such as technical equipment).
