Fourteenth Annual Graduate Humanities Conference

Michel Foucault has said, "What frustrates me, for instance, is the fact that the problem of drugs is always envisaged only as a problem of freedom and prohibition. I think that drugs must become a part of our culture." Along with those sentiments, he has said that there are "good" drugs and "bad" drugs, and that we must study the ones that give us pleasure. Keeping this in mind, this call is for papers that address the topic of drug use that might be seen as something more than abuse. What cultures in the United States might already be following Foucault's advice? Is this drug use done in the same spirit that Foucault suggests? Academic work that explores this topic in films, novels, music and other medias will be welcome.

Keynote:
We are pleased to announce that this year’s keynote speakers are Bonnie Zimmerman and Karen Tongson. Bonnie Zimmerman comes to us from San Diego State University where she is associate vice President for Faculty Affairs. She is well-known for her published work in Feminist and Lesbian studies, along with extensive articles and lectures on topics such as and author George Elliot. Karen Tongson is Assistant Professor of English and Gender Studies at the University of Southern California. She has published essays on topics ranging from Thomas Moore's Irish Melodies, to dyke film-maker and provocateur Lynne Chan's JJ Chinois projects. Her current work focuss on emergent queer of color suburban imaginaries.
