This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be
held at (dis)junctions, University of California,
Riverside's 14th Annual Humanities Conference, April
6-7, 2007.

The theme of this year's conference is
Malappropriation Nation. In keeping with the theme,
this panel will address the Asian and Asian American
women's experiences with malappropriated images of
themselves, whether in media, film, literature or
photography. The reasons and results for such acts
are numerous: exoticization, racism, sexism, fun,
fascination, desire and more are potentially at play.
Proposed papers should focus on any aspect of Asian or
Asian American women's experiences in context to the
idea of appropriation or malappropriation.

Topics could come from many disciplines, including
Asian American Studies, Asian Studies, Ethnic Studies,
literature, journalism, dance, music, visual arts, and
film.

Possible topics:
Independent/Hollywood movies
Mass media/advertising
Fashion
Asian/U.S. pop cultures
Stereotypes within literature
Interracial marriage and dating
Hegemonic cultural impact on self-perception
Race and the body

Email abstracts of approximately 250 words to Kenny
Tanemura at KTanemura_at_aol.com on or before Feb. 16,
2007. All submissions will be acknowledged upon
receipt.
