UPDATE: Transverse: Comparative Literature Journal (grad) (2/5/07; journal issue)
extended deadline for essays: Feb. 5, 2007
Transverse, a graduate literary journal of the Centre for Comparative
Literature at the University of Toronto, invites submissions of essays
for the next issue, to be published in Spring 2007. Transverse is a
paper-based journal with a pdf version available on-line at
www.chass.utoronto.ca/complit/journal.htm
Literary criticism: essays from 3,000 to 4,000 words. Topic:
?Translation: from Imitatio to Literary Influence.? We are interested
in contributions dealing with translation as a seminal factor in the
intersection between national literatures. How can we revaluate
translation in light of the present state of comparative literature?
- How can a certain translation incorporate new elements into the
system of a national literature, or alter the hierarchies already
existing in the national systems (for example, low genres becomes
?high literature?, serious genres are parodied, etc.)
- What?s the role of a translator when dealing with two different
cultural contexts? What happens when the literal translation ? word
for word ? proves to be insufficient?
- How is a writer influenced when he or she translates another author?
There is no need to be part of a comparative literature program, as
long as two authors from two different nations are studied.
Deadline: Feb. 5, 2007. Submissions by e-mail to transversejournal_at_gmail.com
