Fabricating the Body:
Representations of the Body in Literature and Culture
Panel One: American Literature and Culture
Panel Two: British Literature and Culture
<>From the religious to the spectacular, the medicalized to the
transsexual, the body is made to signify in American and British
literature and culture. Whether this signification occurs because of
adornment, surgery, violence, death, tattooing, disease, age, gender,
race, pregnancy, imprisonment, or some other physical, spatial, or
cultural taxonomy, our double session at the 2007 Midwest MLA conference
seeks to interrogate the many fabrications of bodies in American and
British literature and culture. For papers on American topics (any
era), please submit your 250-word abstract to Cammie Sublette,
