CFP: Samuel Beckett in Context (3/1/07; RMMLA, 10/4/07-10/6/07)
Special Topics Session: Beckett in Context
61st Annual Convention of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association =
October 4-6, 2007, Calgary, Alberta, Canada=20
Since Georg Luk=E1cs first identified Beckett as the "ne plus ultra" of =
"bourgeois modernism" in 1957, the large and varied body of Beckett =
criticism has done relatively little to challenge his supposed status as =
an "ahistorical" and "apolitical" artist. In recent years, however, =
there has been a rising call to recover the social, cultural, and =
political contexts of Beckett's writing to better understand both its =
experimental forms and its ideological significance-the present call of =
papers seeks to extend this vital investigation.
Papers may address topics such as:
Beckett and Ireland/Irish modernism
Beckett and cultural memory
Beckett and postcoloniality
Beckett and the avant-garde
Beckett and World War II
Beckett and Parisian intellectual life
Essays addressing other contextual considerations will also be =
considered. Please send a 250-word abstract to Patrick Bixby =
(pbixby_at_asu.edu), New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, =
Arizona State University. The deadline for proposals is March 1, 2007. =
You do not have to be a member of RMMLA to propose a paper, but you must =
become a member by April 1, 2007 to be included in the program. For =
more information, please see: rmmla.wsu.edu.
