(3-8 June 2007)
Corfu, Greece
DEADLINE EXTENSION: March 1, 2007
http://www.durrell-school-corfu.org
For its June seminar, "The Writer's Reputation," the Durrell School of Corfu
is extending its deadline for general submissions and invites proposals that
address the following topics in particular:
-- the role of Translation in developing reputation
-- the relationship between reputation and the literary canon
-- case studies focusing on 'forgotten' writers, especially with regard to
nationalism, sexualities, and gender
-- discussion is particularly welcome on the 'others of Modernism,' the
'others' of Indian literature in English, and the reclaiming of 'lost'
authors by feminist &/or gay & lesbian studies scholars
-- studies of Oscar Wilde, Djuna Barnes, Lawrence Durrell, Ezra Pound,
Richard Aldington, David Gascoyne, and Doris Lessing are particularly
welcome
_______
General submissions under the initial Call for Papers are also welcome
(http://www.durrell-school-corfu.org/cfp2007_wr.htm), but the above topics
are of specific interest for the seminar as it has developed to date.
The seminar will be moderated by Aaron Jaffe (University of Louisville,
author of Modernism and the Culture of Celebrity) and Harish Trivedi
(University of Delhi, author of Colonial Transactions: English Literature
and India). Nikos Papandreou will discuss significant Greek writers not
recognised widely outside of the Greek-speaking community, in addition to a
talk for the Friends of the Durrell Library on the music of Theodorakis and
Hadjidakis.
Proposals (2 pages maximum), together with the author's CV, should reach the
Durrell School by 1 March 2007 (durrells_at_otenet.gr).
Presentations will be limited to 30 minutes each, with another 30 minutes
allocated for discussion by participants including resident faculty and the
moderators.
Full texts of accepted presentations must be received by the DSC by 1 May
2007 in electronic form, to facilitate circulation to all participants in
advance. The papers should not be read at the seminar, but spoken to, since
they will have been read by participants before the seminar opens.
A selection of papers will be published as part of the DSC's Proceedings.
The registration fee for the seminar will be 300 euros for participants (to
include costs of field classes) and 350 euros for those who wish to take
part in the discussions but who do not wish to present papers.
The authors of accepted proposals will be asked to give the DSC an assurance
that they have secured adequate funding to enable them to take up the places
offered to them.
The DSC cannot be responsible for any costs associated with travel or
accommodation. Intending participants should consult the DSC website for
details of accommodation available in Corfu.
