Call for Papers and Creative Submissions Seventh Biennial Southern Women
Writers Conference Berry College Mount Berry, GA September 27-29, 2007
 
Conference speakers to include: Barbara C. Ewell, Kaye Gibbons, Vertamae
Grosvenor, Minrose Gwin, Lorraine Lopez, Jill McCorkle, Harryette
Mullen, Brenda Marie Osbey, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Minton Sparks, and a
special evening with Dr. Maya Angelou (in conjunction with One Book,
Many Voices Rome Community Read)
                
Since its inception in 1994, the Southern Women Writers Conference has
been devoted to showcasing the works of well known and emerging southern
women writers, expanding the literary canon, and developing critical and
theoretical understandings of traditions and innovations in southern
women's writing.

The theme for the 2007 conference is "Homecomings." Through their
writing, southern women past and present have celebrated, questioned,
and sometimes resisted the meaning of "home." Whether literal or
metaphoric, "homecoming" by definition includes both a departure and a
return. But what drives the leaving, the return-choice, or circumstance?
Who is changed, and what is lost, or gained, by the departure, by the
return? Is the idea of homecoming touched with joyful anticipation,
tinged with nostalgia, or tempered by ambivalence or regret? We invite
critical and creative submissions that explore the full range of
approaches to the theme of homecomings explored by women in and of the
South, including but not limited to:
* canonical and non-canonical works of fiction, poetry,
autobiography, and drama
* non-discursive works (film, photography, performance art, etc.)
* works by native southerners set outside the traditional
boundaries of the South
* works by and about women who have been marginalized or "exiled"
by race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, religious beliefs, etc.
* new works by and about women who were exiled by Hurricane
Katrina and those who have returned home
* works by and about Georgia women writers
The 2007 conference will also explore the conference theme by welcoming
"home" several celebrated speakers from past conferences.

Critical Submissions: Please send 300-word abstracts or completed papers
that can be read aloud in twenty minutes. If submitting a proposal for a
panel, please include the names of participants and abstracts for
individual papers.

Creative submissions: Please submit creative work (poetry, fiction,
creative nonfiction, or drama), appropriate to the conference's thematic
focus, for a twenty-minute reading. Authors should be women who meet at
least one of the following criteria: were born in or grew up in the U.S.
South; currently live in the U.S. South; write about the U.S. South.

All submissions should be postmarked no later than Monday, April 2,
2007 and may be sent via e-mail as attachments in MS Word format to
swwc_at_berry.edu or by regular mail to:
