CFP: 'Britain for Beginners: Defining a Nation for Study Abroad'
Registration Deadline: 1 March 2007
Conference Date: 24 March 2007

The vexed question of what constitutes 'Britishness' is rarely absent from the headlines and politicians' lips in Britain today. This one-day conference at the Centre for British Studies at Harlaxton will seek to consider how students of Britain access and understand this debate, and indeed what the debating lines are. In what ways and to what ends do those exploring the nation/s in the class or seminar room approach the debate? Does pedagogy inevitably become politics in this arena in the UK today? How is Britain presented within current study abroad programmes? How is Britain's 'national identity' presented to 'natives', to immigrants, to the rest of the world?

Our keynote speaker will be Dr Angus Hawkins, FRHistS, the Director of International Programmes in the Department for Continuing Education at Oxford University.

We welcome delegates from all kinds of institutions involved in the teaching and study of 'Britishness'.

The registration fee for this conference is £15 for waged, £10 for unwaged delegates and includes lunch, a guided tour of the manor, and a National Trust choir performance. Harlaxton Manor (near Grantham) is easy to reach by both car and train (for example in 1h 10min from London King's Cross). Use the following link for travel information and the registration form:
