  Dear Colleagues,
   
              We would like to invite you to our International Symposium in tribute to Ira Aldridge, the First Internationally Known African-American Actor. The symposium is being organised by the British and Commonwealth Studies Department at the University of Lodz (Poland). Our academic event is meant to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of Aldridge's birth in 1807. Lodz, the second biggest city in Poland, is proud of its special connection with Aldridge, since he died here in 1867. His grave in the Evangelical Cemetery constitutes a significant place of worship in the memory of Lodz citizens, though this important African-American Actor never performed in our town.
              We leave the topic of our symposium open as we would like to generate and facilitate a dynamic interdisciplinary academic meeting devoted to his life and achievements and the cultural repercussions of his role in international culture, especially in Theatre, African-American and Shakespeare Studies. The symposium is to take place on July 23-25, 2007 at the Conference Centre of the University of Lodz, Kopcinskiego 16/18 street.
              I look forward to our cooperation in this important academic endeavour. This will be the first symposium ever devoted entirely to Ira Aldridge.

  PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME:
              Participants are expected to check in on 22nd July 2007 (Sunday). The programme starts the following morning and finishes after dinner on the 24th July 2007 (Tuesday). Individual sessions (lectures or workshops) will last 40 minutes with an additional 20 minutes for discussion. The programme and format of various presentations will depend on the number of participants and may be modified accordingly. More information will be given as soon as we have confirmation of your participation in the programme.
  CONFERENCE LANGUAGE:
  The symposium language of the British and Commonwealth Studies Department will be English. Papers should be given and abstracts submitted in English. The symposium will be informal, giving all participants the opportunity to exchange ideas.
  ABSTRACTS:
              Participants wishing to read a paper or conduct a workshop are requested to send a 300-400 word (two pages) double-spaced abstract to one of the Secretaries of the Symposium Organisational Committee. The Committee has the right to make amendments to the pages. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 30th April 2007.
  PROCEEDINGS:
              Papers accepted for inclusion in the programme should be submitted in English with an accompanying 3,5 inch double or high-density or CD-ROM in Word for Windows 6.0. after the symposium ends. All papers presented at Lodz will be considered for publication in the proceedings of the symposium.
  ACCOMMODATION:
              The Symposium Committee will provide accommodation and full board at the University of Lodz Training and Conference Centre, where the conference will be held.   FEE:
  The registration fee is 300 PLN. The fee should be transferred to the bank account of the University of Lodz: bank PKO SA II O/Lodz, 1412403028 1111 0010 04347782 with the note "Ira Aldridge's Symposium" by the 30th April 2007.
