Call for Papers

Conference
IRISH WOMEN WRITERS:
National and European Contexts

University of Leuven, Belgium
Wednesday 24 October =96 Saturday 27 October 2007

Confirmed Plenary speakers: Patricia Coughlan,=20
Ann Owen Weekes, Anne Fogarty and Sin=E9ad Morrissey

With such recent publications as Volumes IV and V=20
of the Field Day Anthology, the Greenwood Guide=20
to Irish Women Writers and the Dictionary of=20
Munster Women Writers, literature by Irish women=20
has come to enjoy an unprecedented critical=20
attention. Across the different genres of modern=20
literature, the writing of Irish women has turned=20
out to be more varied, rich and interesting than=20
had previously been thought. This conference=20
wants to demonstrate this richness by providing a=20
platform for exchange of research and critical=20
discussion on all aspects of the literature of=20
Irish women writers, both in English and in=20
Gaelic. We invite historical, theoretical,=20
political, cultural or textual analyses of=20
literary texts and would particularly welcome=20
papers that seek to situate these texts within=20
the larger framework of a female literary=20
tradition, both in an Irish and in a European=20
context. The larger cultural context of literary=20
production and reception for Irish women writers=20
of the last three centuries also provides topics for discussion.

The conference is hosted by the University of=20
Leuven and the Louvain Institute of Ireland in=20
Europe. The conference will take place in the old=20
Irish college in Leuven, which celebrates its=20
400th anniversary in 2007. Papers should be in=20
English and should not exceed 2500-3000 words (20 minutes=92 delivery).

Proposals for papers (250 words) should be sent=20
by e-mail to Elke D=92hoker (elke.dhoker_at_arts.kuleuven.be) by 30 April 2007
