Fourth Australian International Academic Conference on Motherhood
The Mother: Images, Issues and Practices
Thursday 5th July 2007 - Saturday 7th July 2007
The University of Queensland, St Lucia Q 4072, Brisbane, Australia
This Conference will explore, examine, critique, theorise, and respond to
key issues and recent research into images and their effects on mothers,
maternal issues and how these issues have been theorised by mothers
themselves, and how mothers see their practices when rearing their children.
Key note speaker for the Conference will be Associate Professor Tina Miller
from the Department of Sociology and Social policy at Oxford Brookes
University, United Kingdom. Her research and teaching interests include
mothering and caring responsibilities, selves and identity construction,
health and illness experiences, narrative and qualitative research methods.
Her recent publications include Making Sense of Motherhood: A Narrative
Approach (Cambridge University Press 2005) and Ethics in Qualitative
Research (Sage 2002) which she co-edited with other members of the women's
workshop. Her doctoral work explored women's journeys into first-time
motherhood and was entitled 'An exploration of first-time motherhood:
narratives of transition'. Tina has three daughters and lives in the UK.
Leading maternal scholar, Associate Professor Andrea O'Reilly of York
University, Canada, (President of the Association for Research on Mothering
based at York University,) will also be attending. Enquiries have come from
both Australian and International scholars. This conference promises to be
as stimulating, informative, successful and congenial as the previous
Australian conferences have been.
Registration is available on this site and includes a light supper/afternoon
tea on Thursday p.m. morning and afternoon teas and lunch on Friday and
Saturday. Concession prices are for all students and those who are unwaged.
