SIGNPOST POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE
26th - 28th April 2007
Department of English
University of Yaounde 1
Cameroon
Theme: Globalisation: Building Bridges?
Man since the advent of his mobility has witnessed the intriguing paradox of spatial reduction and experiential expansion. The evolution of this process, aided by technological advancements have seen the emergence of the "global village". These phenomena have given rise to contacts, confluences and conflicts in aspects of power, influences, identities, values and visions.
Language and literature have remained two of the domains most affected by the globalisation phenomenon. This is due to their polyvalent qualities as cultural and ideological vectors and currencies with / through which other values and fields are transacted and communicated. Language and litearture have, as such, served to define convergence centers and divergence polarities.
It is against the background of this prism of paradoxes and contradictions that the phenomenon of globalisation is constantly soliciting interrogations and explorations manifested in dialectic dynamics of globalisation versus nationalism, the centers versus the peripheries, unity in diversity, otherness and many such conditions characterising literary and linguistic globalisation.
We welcome abstracts that address the issues raised above and the following:
Universality
Acceptance
Reconciliation
Diversity
Regional intergration
Re-writing the periphery
