CFP: Performance and Spirituality (5/15/07; journal issue)
Performance and Spirituality:
The Journal of the Institute for the Study of Performance and Spirituality
CFP: "Delineating the Field": Submission Deadline, May 15, 2007.
(The Institute for the Study of Performance and Spirituality is an emerging
research center that operates in association with the Martin E. Segal Theatre
Center of The Graduate Center, of the City University of New York.)
Performance and Spirituality-an peer-reviewed, annually-published online
journal dedicated to examining intersections of new and alternative forms of
spirituality/religion and theatre/performance-is seeking articles for the first
issue, entitled "Delineating the Field." A "new" and/or "alternative"
spirituality/religion refers to any such movement, current, or worldview that is
perceived as somehow outside of the "traditional," "dominant," or "mainstream"
conventions of the society/societies in which it appears. Examples might
include alchemy, Falun Gong, freemasonry, Santeria, neo-paganism, the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness, spiritualism, the contemporary Christian
rapture culture-and many others. The purpose of this issue is to reveal the
richness, breadth, and diversity of this field of study, and to show the
continuous adaptation and transformation of the relationship between
religion/spirituality and performance/theatre. A non-exhaustive list of possible subjects
include: historical, cultural, and theoretical analyses of performance
traditions that are associated with new and alternative spiritual/religious
movements of any time period; examinations of "secular" performances that deal with
concepts from new and alternative spirituality and religion; articles that
employ methods from theatre studies, performance studies, and other
disciplines (i.e. sociology of religion, urban anthropology, etc.) to examine relevant
performance and theatre.
Illustrations and video clips-even raw quality-are encouraged. (Submit
video clips, photographs, or images in downloadable form via email.)
Please submit articles of 20 to 30 pages in length, accompanied by a
200-word abstract to Dr. Edmund Lingan at ISPSEditor_at_aol.com by May 15, 2007, with
"Performance and Spirituality Article" in the subject header. Manuscripts
should be in Times New Roman (12 point) font, and double-spaced throughout
(including endnotes). All submissions should be prepared according to the Chicago
Manual of Style, 15th ed. Submissions must be in PC compatible Microsoft
Word. Contributors are responsible for obtaining permission and paying costs to
reproduce any materials, including illustrations and video clips for which
they do not hold the copyright. To secure a blind reading, the title of the
essay, author's name, mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and email address
should appear on a separate cover sheet (with the title repeated on the
first page of the article).
