Call for Papers:

T.S. Eliot, Dante, and the European Tradition: An International Symposium
Florence, Italy, January 19th – 26th, 2008

Participants will experience the pleasures of intellectual exchange in the
environs of Florence, staying at a three star hotel and enjoying daily
excursions and activities, as well as free time to explore the city.

CONFERENCE THEME: T.S. Eliot was influenced by Dante Alighieri and loved the
culture of Florence and Italy. He wrote poems and essays dedicated to Italy and
Dante, and re-introduced Dante to the Twentieth-century English-speaking world.
This international symposium will focus upon the influence of Dante upon
Twentieth-century English and American Modernist literature through the medium
of T.S. Eliot's criticism and poetry. Possible topics include, but are not
limited to:

--Dante's Influence on or Presence in Eliot's Poetry and Criticism
--Dantean Motifs in Modernist Poetry
--Eliot, Modernist Poetry, and the Italian Visual Art of the Renaissance
--The Divine Comedy and major modernist works (e.g., Four Quartets, Ulysses, The
Cantos . . . )
--Dante's Theory of Perception in Modernist Literary Theory
--Anglo-European Dante Scholarship of the Twentieth Century
--Dante and Eliot
--Any other topic appropriate to the theme

Participants should be scholars or critics of literature and/or other arts.
Attendance of younger researchers is encouraged. The symposium will take place
under the sponsorship of the Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation, and the number of
participants is restricted to 30.
