CFP: Billy Wilder Essays (6/15/07; collection)
CALL FOR ESSAY PROPOSALS
BILLY WILDER BOOK COLLECTION
Billy Wilder has always occupied an uneasy position in film's critical
opinion. Andrew Sarris' initially dismissive categorisation of Wilder's
directorial significance as 'Less Than Meets the Eye' is indicative of
the faint praise from which his films have suffered. Frequently damned
for the combination of cynicism and romanticism infused through his
work, commentators have historically rarely appreciated Wilder's
expertise in mixing biting social commentary with humour and a
particular fascination with his American subject. Yet Wilder's readiness
to explore the nation's character, his taste for American vernacular and
fondness for the flawed individual have provided cinema with some of the
finest films to chronicle the shifting attitudes and values of the
post-war era.
This collection of essays seeks to renew the minimal scholarship
existing on Billy Wilder. Papers are sought on any aspect of Wilder's
work, both in Europe and Hollywood. Please email a 250 word proposal in
the body of an email or as a word attachment, together with a brief
biography, by June 15, 2007. Completed essays will be due by May 2008.
Submissions should be emailed to k.mcnally_at_londonmet.ac.uk.
