Special Session: Souvenir Objects/Romantic Souvenirs

Approved by the conference organizers for the 2007 International Conference on Romanticism, Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland, 10/18/07 – 10/21/07:

Is the souvenir an exemplary and/or a particularly Romantic object? The OED dates the first use in English of "souvenir" as a term for an object or token of remembrance to 1782. Papers are invited on any type of souvenir or keepsake object (tourist items, commemorative objects, miniatures, replicas, locks of hair, celebrity souvenirs, gift-books, autograph albums, etc.) and on any aspect of the souvenir in Romantic culture. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the souvenir with or against literary figurations of memory and desire; the souvenir and modes of historical experience; rituals of gift-giving and forms of friendship; the souvenir and ideas of place; exotic souvenirs and imperial subjectivities; political souvenirs and radical culture; souvenir objects and royal or national iconography; inscription and image on the souvenir; the souvenir and narrative (especially historical, biographical and autobiographical narrative); souvenirs and mourning; texts as so
uvenirs; Romantic writers or readers as souvenir collectors; the role of souvenirs in the cultural transmission of Romanticism.
