The International Arthurian Society (North American Branch) invites
submissions to its “Teaching Arthur” panel at the 43rd International
Congress of Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, MI, May 8-11, 2008.

An Arthurian course is arguably one of the most easily filled medieval
studies classes on the average campus. This enthusiasm is both a blessing
and a curse for the medievalist, who must negotiate the expectations
created by contemporary forms of Arthuriana while addressing the
multi-faceted medieval Arthurian tradition. Arthur’s ongoing popularity
should lead us to ask: What do we teach when we teach Arthur? This panel is
especially interested in innovative approaches to teaching the Arthurian
tradition in the classroom, either in course content or methodology.

Possible topics include:
-“teaching Arthur” in contexts other than literary studies
-Arthurian tradition and the history of ideas/theory
-Arthur on location: studies abroad
-Arthur and popular culture
-non-canonical Arthurian texts in the classroom

Please submit abstracts of 200-300 words by September 10th, 2007.
