"Old Gems in New Settings"
NEMLA, Buffalo, NY, April 10-13, 2008

This panel invites papers on the teaching of early British literature in
survey courses. Practical pedagogical explorations are welcome, as well as
papers addressing theoretical concerns. How are concerns about manuscript,
generic, and cultural contexts transformed when medieval texts are placed
in the context of a survey course for modern students? How are medieval
works changed when seen in the contexts of post-medieval works? Send one-
page abstracts to Rebecca Lartigue at rlartigu_at_spfldcol.edu . DEADLINE
EXTENDED TO 10/10/07.

CFP: [Poetry] Poetry and Education Conference in Dublin, Ireland: 22-23rd February 2008

Kit Fryatt

Poetry has always played an important role in education: the didactic and
mnemonic potential of verse has long been recognised; certain poems have
been regarded as essential to a good education. Recently, however, the
relationship between poetry and education has changed. The rise of
creative writing programmes in universities, increasing numbers of poets
pursuing academic careers, and a growth in writing workshop culture has
altered the way we see poetry in education and education in poetry.
Papers dealing with a broad range of issues relating to poetry and
education, past and present, are invited for a conference at the Mater Dei
Institute of Education, Dublin, Ireland, on 22nd-23rd February 2008.
