Papers are sought for a proposed panel on “Representations of Trauma in
Literature and Film” at the Cultural Studies Association Annual Meeting at
New York University, May 22-24, 2008.
Psychotherapists such as Dori Laub, Bessel van der Kolk, Onno van der Hart,
and Judith Herman have repeatedly underscored the visual nature of
traumatic experiences, which tend to be engraved in memory in the form of
images or icons. This would suggest that visual media provide the most
expedient canvas for representing these moments of crisis, and movies like
Sidney Lumet’s "The Pawnbroker" (1964), Christopher Nolan’s "Memento"
(2000), or Brad Anderson’s "The Machinist" (2004) confirm the validity of
this assumption. Yet, at the same time, the introspective realm of
literature, ranging from written witness testimony to imaginative fiction,
is undoubtedly the more logical venue for the staging or analysis of
psychological and psychopathological effects. We are therefore inviting
comparative papers (15-20 minutes) that analyze differences â€" and
similarities â€" between literary and audio-visual representations of trauma,
and that reflect on the possible theoretical implications of such
comparative analysis. Audio-visual representations also include
documentaries (such as "Shoah," "9/11," etc.), TV-series ("Holocaust,"
"Roots," etc.), and videotaped testimony (Fortunoff Video Archive,
Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation, etc.).
