‘Fame and Fortune’

We are pleased to invite papers from postgraduate medievalists of any
discipline on the theme of Fame and Fortune. We welcome papers that
interpret this theme in any illuminating way, such as (but not limited
to) the following:

â€" Medieval concepts of fame, reputation and celebrity
â€" Philosophical and theological accounts of fortune, chance and destiny
â€" Fama and Fortuna as goddesses
â€" Making and breaking fortunes through trade, politics etc.
â€" The representation of self and others, in biography, autobiography and
hagiography.
â€" Medieval means to the enhancement of reputation (good works, endowments
etc.)
â€" Defamation and slander in the Middle Ages
â€" Attitudes in the period to wealth and poverty
â€" The fame and reputation of pre-medieval figures in the medieval period

Papers should be 20 minutes long. Abstracts of up to 400 words should be
received by 31st December 2007 and can be sent by email (for preference)
