Thursday, March 6, 2008
Hart House at the University of Toronto
An interdisciplinary group of graduate students at the University of
Toronto is organizing "Matters of Life and Death" in order to grapple
with key questions on the theoretical horizon in many disciplines: What
constitutes life and how is this life managed, commodified, and
objectified? Is there a politics of life? Where does life stop and death
begin?

Patterns of conventions are established within the world of art or between
that world and parallel ones, such as the world of literature, but they go
no farther. We maintain a special sanctity about the aesthetic object
which we deny to the conventions of representation in other areas.

The National Coalition of Independent Scholars will hold its 2008 Biennial
Conference from October 24-26, 2008, at the Graduate Theological Union in
Berkeley, California. We welcome participation by all scholars whose
research is not supported by employment in an academic or research
institution; this includes adjunct faculty and graduate students.
Presenters need not be members of NCIS.
The Program Committee invites proposals for individual papers, formal
sessions, and short panel discussions for either the practical track, on
independent scholarship itself; or the scholarly track, focusing on
presenters’ individual research and findings.

The focus of the work is on modelling blood flow in a medium-to-large
systemic arteries assuming
cylinderical geometry, axially symmetric flow, and viscoelasticity of
arterial walls. The aim is to develop a
reduced model that would capture certain physical phenomena that have
been neglected in the derivation
of the standard axially symmetric one-dimensional models, while at the
same time keeping the numerical
simulations fast and simple, utilizing one-dimensional algorithms.
We study the flow of incompressible viscous fluid through a long tube
with compliant walls. the flow
is governed by a given time-dependent velocity and pressure. The Navier-
Stokes equations for an incompressible
Dear Colleagues,
I am inviting paper proposals for a seminar of 8-12 presenters at
the American Comparative Literature Association. The plan is to turn the
the proceedings of the conference into a publication. Please spread the
word. Thanks.
