UPDATE: [American] Sarah Piatt (12/21/07; ALA 5/22/08-5/25/08)
This is a call for papers to complete a panel proposal on the poetry of
Sarah Piatt for the 19th annual American Literature Association
Since the 2001 publication of Paula Bennett's Palace-Burner, scholars
have taken a fresh look at Sarah Piatt, thus contributing to our
understanding of 19th-century American women’s writing. As contemporary
critics have articulated, much of Piatt’s poetry addresses gender issues,
often from within the traditionally feminine domains of family, marriage,
and motherhood. This proposed panel seeks to broaden the critical
conversation, engaging gender without necessarily making Piatt’s gender
politics the primary focus of study. Papers on a range of topics related
to the author’s work are welcomed; however, studies that explore Piatt’s
treatment of race, religion, class, and social politics are most
desirable. Also of interest are papers that deal with the transatlantic
Piatt or that address the lesser known poems (those not available in 20th
or 21st century texts).
Please send a one page abstract and a brief cv to Mary Wearn by December
21st. Materials can be sent via email to mary.wearn_at_maconstate.edu.
The American Literature Association’s 19th annual conference will meet at
the Hyatt Regency San Francisco in Embarcadero Center on May 22-25, 2008.
