As part of the July 24-27 Comic Arts Conference in San Diego, CA, 200-word
abstracts for papers or presentations are now being accepted for this panel
specifically focused on the application of contemporary theoretical models
to the practice and published work of the comic book medium.

With the medium gaining increasing mainstream attention and the field of
comic book scholarship growing in the academy nationwide, a greater
engagement with theory â€" specifically targeting comics or from without the
discipline â€" is strongly warranted. Therefore, this panel will be an
attempt to further that goal, going beyond traditional, tired appliances of
Deconstruction or Myth Criticism into either new or highly relevant models.

Theoretical work from the fields of Art History, Literary Theory,
Communications, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, and all associated
disciplines are welcome, though no other branch of learning is prohibited.
Particular favor will be given to those attempting to work with
comic-specific concepts such as Groenstein’s System of Comics, McCloud’s
Making Comics, Varnum & Gibbons Language of Comics, Heer & Worchester’s
Arguing Comics, Carrier’s Aesthetics of Comics, or Cohn’s Early Writings on
Visual Language.

The Conference is designed to bring together comics scholars,
professionals, critics, and historians who wish to promote or engage in
serious study of the medium, and to do so in a forum that includes the public.
