CFP: [American] Hemingwayâs Other Women (3/10/08; 2008 MLA)
Hemingway’s Other Women (3/10/08; 2008 MLA)
MLA in San Francisco, December 27-30, 2008
This panel aims to explore Hemingway’s relationship to women writers. In
1999 Bernice Kert published her well-respected and insightful,
Hemingway’s Women, a book that explored the role of the women in
Hemingway’s personal life (wives, lovers, friends). This panel seeks to
honor and expand Kert’s work by examining Hemingway’s relationship to his
female colleagues including but not limited to Virginia Woolf, Djuna
Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Willa Cather, Dorothy Parker, Zelda Fitzgerald,
Isak Dinesen, etc. We also welcome studies that examine the way
Hemingway was influenced by women writers before his time as well as his
influence on women writers after his time.
