DEADLINE UPDATE

New Directions in Critical Theory is an annual interdisciplinary graduate
student conference at the University of Arizona; the 2008 conference will
focus on a self-conscious examination of the ways we do work at the
university. While interdiscplinarity questions the boundaries that mark
off everything from university departments to methods of inquiry, the
space between disciplines is not a neutral zone. When we shuffle prefixes
and suffixes in an attempt to announce new disciplines and identities, we
work in a liminal space that we participate in creating. This endeavor
must be undertaken cautiously; remapping disciplines and identities is
never an innocent game.

We wish to build upon the interdisciplinary nature of many graduate
programs and knowledge in general to acknowledge the potential impact of
these growing movements in the academy, in theory, and in praxis. We
welcome papers and presentations that put to work both interdisciplinary
approaches and those that examine such approaches self-reflexively.
Traditionally, New Directions sponsors guest speakers whose work relates
to the theme of the conference. This year will be no different. Dr. Paul
Gilmore of California State--Long Beach will deliver one of two plenary
addresses. We are currently still in the process of negotiating contracts
with an additional speaker. An update will be posted when the speaker is
confirmed.

We invite graduate students from any discipline to present
theoretically-oriented scholarship and creative work (such as
photography, poetry, film, artwork, installation projects, and so on)
that may take an interdisciplinary approach. A list of possible topics
and subject areas may include (but are not limited to):
