I am soliciting abstracts for a proposed Special Session at the 2008 MLA
Convention [27-30 December 2008 in San Francisco]. Accepted panelists
must be MLA members by April 1, 2008.

2008 marks the centennial of Richard Wright’s birth, and an opportune
moment for reconsiderations of his lesser-read, nonfiction works, as well
as his trans-national and non-aligned writerly commitments more broadly.
Important topics include:

--Wright’s travel writing (Black Power, The Color Curtain, and Pagan
Spain)

--Wright’s interest in rearticulating Marxist and Freudian theories to
reflect post-colonial realities

--Wright’s personal and authorial position vis-à-vis the Cold War

InterCulture is a peer-reviewed e-journal seeking academic papers (3,000
to 6,000 words), reviews (1,000 to 3,000 words) and creative work
pertaining to the theme "Perspectives on War: Media and Memory."

Literature and Religion Session
We welcome submission of proposals for individual papers that consider, but
are not limited to, the relationship of literature to the following issues:

The 14th Annual Southern Writers, Southern Writing is a University of
Mississippi Graduate Student Conference held in conjunction with the Annual
Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference.
The Graduate Students in the Departments of English and Southern Studies
invite you to submit abstracts exploring Southern culture. Accepted
submissions will be presented in Oxford, Mississippi, July 17th-19th, 2008.
 The keynote speaker will be John T. Edge, director of the Southern
Foodways Alliance and author of numerous books on Southern cuisine,
including Fried Chicken: An American Story.

Topics for papers or panels are not restricted to literature. They may include:
