Call for Papers: Literature and Medicine have a long history of cross-
pollination, and there has always been a great deal of reciprocity in the
relation between literature and medicine, and in the cultural mythologies
about literature, suffering, death and grief so often embodied in
literature. This panel will explore the relationships between medicine
and literature, as both worlds give attention to the human dimensions
that come into play in the human body in the face of illness. Papers
will center on the more contemporary response to illness as it is lived
out in individuals, in the family, in the community and in the body
politic. The papers might deal with the complicated issues of what it
is like to be ill, what it is like to care for the sick, what it is like
to confront illness and sometimes succumb to it, and what it is like to
grieve. The body then goes from being merely the body of an individual
to the representation of the body politic. A study of the resonance
between medicine and literature will engender hopefully new approaches to
critical thinking about illness and, more important, about the human

A proposal for a paper should consist of a 250-350 word abstract. Paper
proposals must also include the paper title, and the name, day and
evening phone numbers, fax number, e-mail address, surface mail address,
and institutional affiliation of the presenter. Please also include a
brief career biography.
