Ecocriticism
Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association (RMMLA)
October 9-11, 2008
Reno, Nevada

Inspired by the growing membership in international chapters of ASLE and
the global effects of climate change and social injustice, this panel
seeks papers with an international and cross-cultural ecocritical
perspective. Topics might include: analyses of literary depictions of
cross-cultural dependencies (e.g. Chinese and American market
dependencies, and the construction of over-night cities); ecocritical
responses to anime and the role of media in creating a globally
consistent vision of environmental thought; or ecocritical engagement
with writings or writers that cross international boundaries (e.g. Kiran
Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss, which takes place in India and the
United States.) These ecocritical perspectives might draw on related
theories such as trauma studies and postcolonial theory.
