CALL FOR PAPERS
 
“CURRENCY”
Graduate Student Poetics Symposium

We are pleased to invite papers that offer questions, challenges,
elaborations, and interpretations of this year’s theme. We are
particularly interested in papers that work with poetry in languages other
than English and take a comparative or interdisciplinary approach.
Topics may include but are not confined to the following:
· Poetry and current events.
· Reportage. Timeliness and news-worthiness.
· Economies and circulatory systems as tropes for value.
· Politics of poetry publication, circulation, and reception.
· New technologies and the composition and promulgation of poetry.
· Poetic language as a coin: as token, ticket, or pledge.
· Squandering and saving. Debt and surplus. Gift and commodity
exchange.
· Linguistic coinage.
· Duration and interruption in form.
· The politics of trends and tendencies.
· Theoretical and practical issues in translation.
 
The symposium will consist of three panels, a roundtable, and a poetry
reading. We
will restrict presentation length to twenty minutes to allow enough time
for participants to engage with each other's work in a lively dialog.

In the afternoon, a roundtable will offer a discussion of poetics and
politics, translation, and publishing, by half a dozen editors and
poet-translators. The symposium will conclude with a reading by featured
poet G.C. Waldrep, and a discussion of his latest collection of poems,
Disclamor (2007).
 
Paper proposals should include a title, 250-word abstract, brief biography
(including department affiliation and areas of interest) and contact
information. Please include at least one close reading in your paper and
send us attachments of the poems before the symposium. Audio-visual
equipment is available upon request.
 
If you are interested in moderating a panel, please submit a curriculum
vitae and a brief description of your interest in the symposium by the
proposal deadline.
Deadline for proposals: March 14, 2008.
