CFP: [General] The LBJ: Avian Life, Literary Arts
Friends, colleagues, and bird lovers,
The LBJ (www.literarybirdjournal.org) is soliciting additional pieces for
its fast-approaching late-June inaugural issue in two specific capacities.
First, we’re interested in receiving 250 word proposals leading to feature
articles and essays between 2500 and 3000 words. Pieces can engage with
birds and bird culture in any ways the writer sees fitâ€"-so long as it’s
done thoughtfully, with grace and clarity, and a sharp eye for style. If
interested, please send your proposal, a brief bio, and a writing sample to
editor_at_literarybirdjournal.org.
Second, the LBJ is looking for reviewers of recent bird-oriented
literature. Reviews should be between 500 and 750 words. Books under
review consideration, but as yet remain unassigned, include:
Barcott, Bruce. The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman's Fight to
Save the World's Most Beautiful Bird. Random House.
Gallagher, Tim. Falcon Fever: A Falconer in the Twenty-first Century.
Houghton Mifflin (May 9, 2008).
Kaufmann, Lynn Hassler. The Raven: Soaring Through History, Legend, & Lore.
Rio Nuevo (May 15, 2008).
Keen, Sam. Sightings: Extraordinary Encounters with Ordinary Birds.
Chronicle Books.
Modlin, Richard. Chasing Wings: Birding Exploits and Encounters. Hartside
Publishing.
Plum, Sydney. Solitary Goose. University of Georgia Press.
Weidensaul, Scott. Of a Feather: A Brief History of American Birding. Harcourt.
Books not on this list, but published within the last 12 months, are also
open to consideration. For books on this list or otherwise, please query
The LBJ at editor_at_literarybirdjournal.org.
In either case, proposals and review queries should be sent straight
awayâ€"-by May 1stâ€"-with pieces expected promptly by May 31 to meet our set
publication schedule. Additionally, writers publishing in this inaugural
issue of The LBJ will receive a complimentary copy.
Thanks! We look forward to your submissions, questions, and comments!
