Continuing to engage Rita Felski’s question, asked
over a decade ago in The Gender of Modernity, of what
happens when gender is the central lens through which
we view modernity, this panel will ask how the
aesthetics of women producersâ€"including novelists,
short story writers, filmmakers, journalists, and
poetsâ€"in the 1920s and 1930s might be conceived as
left-wing, right-wing, or an entirely different kind
of political activism or social vision. How might

The Play’s the Thing: Language Play & Performativity

This panel seeks papers which explore the dynamic relationship between
language play and performance. Presentations might focus on French-
language plays, poetic drama, the role of the avant-garde and language
experiments, or theories of performativity. Other topics also welcomed.

Please submit 300-word abstracts, a brief biography, and contact
information to Barbara Cole (bacole_at_buffalo.edu) by May 26, 2008.
Presenters must be members of SAMLA by the time of the convention.

CFP: [Collections] Maurice Kenny

Essays are sought for a collection of critical essays on Mohawk author
Maurice Kenny’s poetry, fiction, and non-fiction works. Kenny is the
recipient of the American Book Award for The Mama Poems (1984), the
Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers’ Lifetime Achievement Award (2002), and
numerous other honors, in addition to being nominated for the Pulitzer
Prize for Blackrobe in 1982. Such a collection should be very well received
and will add greatly to existing scholarship in Native American literature
due to the monumental influence Kenny’s writing has had upon multiethnic
writers since his first chapbook, The Hopeless Kill, appeared in 1956.

Facts On File, a New York publisher of reference books for schools and
libraries, is seeking scholars to edit anthologies of nineteenth- and
early-twentieth-century criticism of the works of Shelley and Byron. The
scholar will introduce and provide context for the critical extracts,
discussing and interpreting how critical reputations are built and change.
In addition, contributing editors will be asked to supply additional
critical extracts and introductory commentary, where needed, to bolster
the publication’s offerings. Respondents should have a PhD, broad

This one-day conference invites papers from a range of disciplines,
reflecting the scope of contemporary feminist interest in spatial
configurations. The conference will address the issue of “how British
women writers represent space”, considering questions such as, how do
women writers construct literary space? What types of spaces/places are
represented in works by women? How are received notions of space/place
interpreted, accepted, or contested? How do we theorise the textual
spaces in women’s writing?
We welcome papers covering British women’s writing over a period ranging
from the mid-19th century to the present. Topics may include, but are not

We are inviting papers for an American Literature Association session
(May 2009) that map the productive potential of Rukeyser's "long body" of
work and its position within 20th-century poetics at large. Ideally,
papers should engage individual poems within the context of the following
questions or themes: How do we use Rukeyser to understand 20th century
American poetics? How do we see Rukeyser's poetry and poetics at play in
the work of contemporary poets and activists? How do we use Rykeyser's
