American Literature Association Symposium on American Fiction (October 2-4, 2008 in Savannah,
Georgia)

I invite proposals for papers that examine war fiction written by American women. Their voices
have been marginalized in many major studies of American war literature, but a number of
anthologies and scholarly works in recent years have brought greater attention to their texts. This
panel is broadly conceived to add to this burgeoning area of study. I seek papers that examine
individual works of fiction by women or that more broadly consider women’s voices concerning war
issues. Who are the major female authors of American war literature? What works by American
women soldiers should be given scholarly attention? How has women’s war fiction contributed to
“modern memory,” as Paul Fussell terms it?

To submit a proposal, please provide a one-page abstract and one-page
c.v. on or before May 30,
2008. Be sure to include your mailing address and email. Submit via MS Word attachment to Mary
Carney at mcarney_at_gsc.edu.

See americanliterature.org for more information on the
conference.
