Essays are sought for a collection of critical essays on Mohawk author
Maurice Kenny’s poetry, fiction, and non-fiction works. Kenny is the
recipient of the American Book Award for The Mama Poems (1984), the
Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers’ Lifetime Achievement Award (2002), and
numerous other honors, in addition to being nominated for the Pulitzer
Prize for Blackrobe in 1982. Such a collection should be very well received
and will add greatly to existing scholarship in Native American literature
due to the monumental influence Kenny’s writing has had upon multiethnic
writers since his first chapbook, The Hopeless Kill, appeared in 1956.

Essays from experts in the field of Native American literature have already
been submitted and are being prepared for ms. submission, and additional
essays are sought specifically regarding Kenny’s essays, memoir, early
poetry (pre-Tekonwatonti), and early fiction (Rain and Other Fictions) as
well as his editorial work and performance/readings. Several university
presses are being considered to sponsor this anthology.

Completed essays will range from 6,000 to 10,000 words. The aim is to
complete the manuscript by late 2008 for 2009 publication. Interested
authors to submit a 250-word abstract, as well as a current CV, in MS Word
format by July 1, 2008.
