"GRAVEN IMAGES: RELIGION IN COMIC BOOKS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS"
Book Collection - Deadline: 8/01/08
The success of the “Graven Images: Religion in Comic Books & Graphic
Novels†conference held April 11-13, 2008 at Boston University has
generated publisher interest in turning its various essays into a print
book collection. Given the limited time previously available for
presentations last April, the conference organizers are now inviting
supplemental submissions to the “Graven Images†collection from further
individuals who did not read their papers live at the 2008 conference.
The Graduate Film Studies Journal is currently looking for submissions for
its third issue. We are looking for 7-10 page essays, completely written
and ready for publication. All papers should be written in proper MLA,
APA, or CMS formatting. All papers should be about film (all aspects of
film and film theory are acceptable). The deadline is September 1st, 2008
(the issue should be ready for full review by October 1st, 2008). If you

Pascal’s Pensées and Literature. Is Pascal’s Pensées a literary text? The
goal of this panel is to think about the essence of literature and the
interpretations and appropriations of Pensées. Comparative works between
Pascal and other writers are also welcome (in French, English, or Spanish).

I am looking for two chapters to complete this anthology, to be published by Continuum in
2009: one on Italian cinema, and the second on male rape, looking more specifically at Bruno
Dumont's 29 Palms.

Bibliography and Textual Studies: "People of the Books: Christianity and
Islam in Book Studies." Participants will consider elements of two
religions and cultures especially concerned not only with the contents
but the paratextual elements of their respective books. This panel is
particularly interested in the intersection of Christianity and Islam in
textual studies, although abstracts on any aspect of either religion as
it relates to bibliography will be considered. Please send 250-word

"Should I Stay or Should I Go?": Metaphors of Motion in Contemporary
American Women's Poetry
Being able to move, and being constrained from moving, have always been
important metaphors for female poets. Thus it comes as no surprise that
motion is a recurring theme in women's poetry in the 20th and 21st
centuries. This panel will examine how contemporary American women poets
use metaphors of motion in their work and what that motion -- or lack of
it -- says about the lives of women as experienced within their poetry.
