Call for papers: Representing Interiors in the Late Eighteenth-Century Novel

This session invites papers that address the intersection of interior spaces (drawing rooms,
closets, secret chambers, tunnels, towers, libraries, theaters, carriages, prisons, churches, and
crypts) with “interiority”, particularly in Gothic fictions. Writers from Ann Radcliffe to Charlotte
Smith or Jane Austen, from Laurence Sterne to Henry Mackenzie or William Godwin engage with
particular interior spaces in complex ways to imagine particular kinds of interiority. Papers might
consider how novels of sensibility, gothic architecture, or domestic fictions, configure and
furnish interior spaces as a way to engage the mind and reveal character interiority, for example,
or examine an individual author or genre for specific themes.

Proposals should be approximately 250 words for a 20-minute paper. Please include your
contact information and anticipated audio-visual needs. Note that all participants must be
members in good standing of ASECS or a constituent society of ISECS. Membership must be
current as of November 1 in order to receive pre-registration materials. Those members of
constituent societies of ISECS MUST furnish a snail mail address to asecs_at_wfu.edu to receive pre-
registration materials.
