Call For Papers: The Dramatic Works of Suzan-Lori Parks

Suzan-Lori Parks is arguably the premier African American/American
playwright working at this time. In addition to numerous awards for her
work, she has won the admiration of many critics and playwrights alike.
But like any artist who attempts to represent the world as he or she
views it, her work has not been free from controversy. Many African
American as well as white critics condemned her plays’ seemingly lack of
verisimilitude and for not adhering to the precepts of social realist
drama epitomized by such playwrights as Lorraine Hansberry, James
Baldwin, Alice Childress, and Ed Bullins, among others. Indeed, it has
only been in the whirlwind of the last few years that most of Parks’
accolades have come. Recognizing Parks’ remarkable contributions to the
African American literary/dramatic tradition and to the continued
greatness of this tradition in American drama in general, Callaloo will
be publishing a special issue on Parks’ drama in 2010. Although essays on
her most famous plays will be considered, we are especially interested in
essays that address her lesser known/studied works.

envelope with loose postage adequate for a letter notifying you of our
All manuscripts must be submitted in triplicate, and must NOT bear the
author’s name or any other identifying information about the author. This
enables our readers to review manuscripts blindly. We cannot begin the
review process until we have received all three blind copies. Please
include a cover letter listing the titles of the submitted works, and
detailing all relevant contact information for the author, including an
email address if available. Each individual copy of essays or unpublished
materials should be stapled. The maximum word limit for any one
manuscript is 10, 000 words (approx. 25 single-spaced pages, 12 point
font. Bibliographies and documented material should follow the MLA Style
Manual (most recent edition). We currently do not accept admissions via
email or fax transmissions from within the United States. Contributors
