"Philosophy, Classics and the Island as Place and Trope." In keeping with
ASLE's 2009 theme, "Island Time: The Fate of Place in a Wired, Warming
World" (http://asle.uvic.ca/call/index[dot]htm), I welcome paper proposals
for a panel that will emphasize the representation and significance of
islands or island life and culture in major works of philosophy or
classical literature. Please send a 600-word maximum abstract for a
twenty-minute scholarly presentation; the abstract should state clearly the
essay's main claims and significance. In addition, please include in a
separate paragraph before the abstract a 50-75 word concise description of
your essay. A copy of your CV as a separate attachment would be
appreciated. Email materials to panel organizer Al Drake, address
ajdrake_at_ajdrake[dot]com, including the phrase "ASLE 2009 Panel" in your
subject line. The deadline for submission is Sunday, October 19th, 2008.
