The Germaine de Staël Society for Revolutionary and Romantic Studies
enthusiastically solicits your participation in the international
scheduled for May 8-10, 2009 at Washington University in Saint Louis

“Teaching Germaine de Staël” (Roundtable). Rudy de Mattos, Department of

This round table will bring together 5-6 scholars, junior scholars or
Graduate students to share ideas and promote discussion of relating
trends and pedagogical methods for teaching the relevancy of Germaine de
Staël’s life and work and the eighteenth century. Possible topics may
include how to incorporate Staël in the classroom; in what kind of
classes (survey course, special topic course, women's and gender study
course etc.)?; how to teach her texts, what text to choose, why and for
what level and then how to approach these texts? How can we raise
students’ interest at the undergraduate level? What pedagogical or
technological tools have you used to raise students’ interest? What
specific problems have you faced when teaching Germaine de Staël and how
can these be resolved? What can be done in raising students’
understanding of the relevance of her work as well as her influence in
Women’s writing in the eighteenth century? How to incorporate technology
when teaching late eighteenth early and nineteenth centuries and Germaine
de Staël?

The 5-10 minute roundtable presentations will be followed by a broader
discussion with the audience in attendance. Please send a short abstract
