UPDATE: [Cultural-Historical] Approaches to Teaching Coetzee's Disgrace and Other Works (1/1/09)
We seek proposals of 500 words for an approved volume, “Approaches to
Teaching Coetzee's
Disgrace and Other Works,†in the MLA series Approaches to Teaching World
Literature. The
volume editors are Laura Wright (Western Carolina University), Jane Poyner (University of Exeter),
and Elleke Boehmer (Oxford University).
We are seeking essays that address pedagogical issues in teaching any combination of the
following novels:
Waiting for the Barbarians (1980)
Life & Times of Michael K (1983)
Foe (1986)
Since South African novelist J. M. Coetzee won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003,
his work
has received increased international attention â€" both in terms of the critical scholarship
it has
generated and in terms of the pedagogical richness it affords instructors of literature. In

particular, the text that preceded Coetzee’s receipt of the Nobel Prize, his 1999 Booker Prize

winning novel Disgrace, has established and maintained a place at the forefront of Coetzee

studies, generating an amount of critical attention and continuously finding its way into an

increasing variety of undergraduate literature classes, including, for example, courses with

specific foci on the novel, postcolonial and world literature, postmodern fiction, animal rights

and ecocriticism, and ethics, as well as more general and introductory literature survey courses.
>From MLA: Approaches to Teaching World Literature, now numbering over eighty volumes,

collects within each book different points of view on teaching a specific literary work, a literary

tradition (e.g., metaphysical poetry), or a writer widely taught at the undergraduate level. The

series is intended to serve nonspecialists as well as specialists. The preparation of an Approaches

to Teaching volume begins with a wide-ranging survey of instructors, enabling the book to

include the philosophies, approaches, thoughts, and methods of scores of experienced teachers.

The result is a sourcebook on teaching the subject of the volume.
